Is Kratom in Connecticut illegal to buy? It’s a question every state in the U.S. is asking in 2020 due to the ever changing laws being put in place on this all natural herb. Kratom is a powder that is derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa plant which is native to Southeast Asian countries. The powder has similar properties to opioid drugs which has resulted in much debate regarding whether it should be banned in the United States.
Kratom Laws in Connecticut
The DEA did make an attempt to have it declared a controlled substance in the same category as heroin and LSD in 2016. However, it quickly dropped its attempt due to general disapproval as well as a lack of scientific research conducted into the effects, side-effects and other properties. The DEA has since asked for research to be expedited as well as public opinion on the matter before it makes a decision as to whether to ban the substance.
This has left the banning of Kratom to individual states. Although it is currently illegal in most of the countries where it originates and has been banned in 6 states across the USA, not everyone has jumped on the band wagon. This is mainly due to the beneficial health properties such as pain relief and the fact that it is an entirely naturally substance.
However, just because it is entirely natural does not make it safe. There are reports of adverse effects and the FDA has delivered an official public warning about the use of the product based on 36 deaths that reportedly resulted from Kratom use.
Is Kratom Legal In Connecticut?
Kratom is currently entirely legal in the state of Connecticut. This means that there are no restrictions on farming, distribution, sale, purchase or use of the substance and that the industry is unregulated by any agency.
In 2014, a bill was introduced that included Kratom on a list of substances that were to be banned in Connecticut. Once again, public and other disapproval led to the substance, along with all its alkaloids, being removed from the list. So while the bill did pass, Kratom was excluded and is therefore still legal in Connecticut.
As for the future of Kratom in Connecticut, it is certain that the debate whether to ban or not to ban will continue and that another move to have the substance declared illegal will be made in the near future.
